MARSHALL – After finishing the regular season two games under .500 at 10-12-1 overall, Marshall has secured the No. 3 seed for the MSHSL Girls Hockey Class A Section 3 Tournament, which kicks off Friday night.

The Tigers will host No. 6 seed Worthington (1-18-0) at 7 p.m. at Lockwood Motors Ice Arena. MHS has already beaten the Trojans twice by a combined score of 23-0.

Other quarterfinal-round matchups include No. 4 seed Fairmont (9-10-1) hosting No. 5 seed Windom Area (4-14-1). No .1 seed New Ulm (16-7-0) and No. 2 seed Luverne (21-3-0) received byes.

Luverne, which enters the section tournament on a nine-game winning streak, will host the winner of Marshall and Worthington on Feb. 11, while New Ulm will host the winner of Fairmont and Windom Area on the same day.

The Tigers are a combined 0-4-0 against New Ulm and Luverne this season. Luverne, which has received votes in the Class A poll, is 10-0-0 against section opponents, while New Ulm, the 19th-ranked team in Class A, is 4-0-0 and Fairmont is 8-5-0.

Marshall, which has played better late this season, is 5-3-0 during its last eight games.

Both the players and coaches know that they can’t be looking ahead to Luverne when they play Worthington.

“It’s really important that we take it one game at a time,” Hannah Peterson said. “If you think about it too much, it just gets too stressful.”

With Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato exposing some of their weaknesses, the Tigers have focused on getting quicker and getting out on the break with a passing-focused attack in practice this week.

If the Tigers get a chance to play Luverne in the semifinal round, coach Kevin Schroeder knows that they will have to make some adjustments.

“We’ll have to adjust to their puck movement,” Schroeder said. “They have a couple of really smart players that really know the game. They create a lot of opportunities for themselves.”
