NCAA WRESTLING: Northern State can’t handle SMSU’s attack

MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang grapplers made quick work of Northern State, shutting down the Wolves 42-3 at home.

The Mustangs grabbed the early 6-0 lead behind a forfeit victory for Antonio Meikel at 125. Justin Reinsma took the mat at 133, racking up multiple takedown and near-fall points, earning a 15-6 major decision over Cody Voegeli.

At 141, Ethan Hildebrant claimed a two-point takedown on Ian Muirhead early in the first period. Hildebrant brought Muirhead to his back but got caught in a reversal in favor of Muirhead, bringing the match score to 5-2 at the end of the first. Hildebrant used two more points in the second and an escape in the third to secure a 7-3 decision over Muirhead.

On the mat for the Mustangs at 149 was Beau Buysse, wrestling Beau Voegeli of Northern. Buysse claimed the first takedown of the match, picking up two points in the first period. Starting on the bottom in the second, Buysse earned a reversal and two-point nearfall, bringing the match score to 6-0 in his favor at the end of the second. In his final period, Buysse ran the score up 11-2 to clinch a major decision, increasing SMSU’s lead to 17-0 over the Wolves.

Wrestling the 157-pound bout for the Mustangs was Codie Lane, taking on Sean Havlovic. Lane brought Havlovic to the mat early but he let him escape. Havlovic answered with a takedown of his own but Lane was able to escape and earn another takedown as time expired in the first period. Both wrestlers earned an escape, each in the second and third period, with Lane taking the decision 6-4.

Kyle Begin took the mat at 165, wrestling Blake Lundgren. The match was knotted at 0-0 entering the second when Kyle Begin earned the takedown, holding Lundgren on his back with a four minute, 55 second pin. Jacob Begin duplicated his brother’s performance at 174, pinning Anthony Navvarro at 2:27.

Andrew Rodas continued SMSU’s eight-match winning streak with a forfeit victory at 184, bringing the match score to 38-0 in the Mustang’s favor.

Micah Larson took the mat at 197 versus Northern’s Joe Gomez. Larson fell behind early with a takedown from Gomez in the first-period. Larson got loose in the second, earning an escape and narrowing Gomez’ 2-1 lead. With Larson starting on top, Gomez was able to escape, bringing the match to 3-1. Gomez added one point in riding time to claim the bout with a 4-1 decision over Larson.

The final match of the night was between SMSU’s Cole Wilson and Northern’s Anthony Reurink. Wilson jumped out to an early lead in the first behind two takedowns. Wilson never looked back, racking-up 10 points and only allowing two escapes in the match, winning 10-2.

The Mustangs claimed the match 42-3.

“I thought they did a great job,” head coach Jesse Nelson said. “We were attacking every situation which is what we were looking to do and we accomplished that.”

As the season winds down, the Mustangs have one regular-season dual against the University of Mary then start preparing for their trip to the Super Region 3.

“You get towards the end of the season and you want to get some things tuned up and get ready to go,” Nelson said. “It was a good showing for us tonight and we were able to do those things.”
