A familiar face in Lucan

LUCAN – Anna Knott isn’t a new face at Lucan’s only dining establishment. But while Knott is familiar with the town and the customers, during the past couple of months she’s been taking on a new role as the owner of Knott’s Corner Bar and Grill, formerly known as the Brauhaus in Lucan.

“It’s been very busy. I can’t complain,” Knott said of the new venture.

Knott, who has about seven years of experience working with the business, officially took ownership in January. The restaurant’s name change reflects the new ownership, but Knott said she hopes it also helps avoid confusion with the Brau Brothers Brewery, which moved to Marshall last year. Knott’s Corner isn’t affiliated with the brewery, but Knott says she still gets phone calls about it sometimes.

“It was time for a name change,” she said. However, the staff, service and many menu items are still the same.

Knott was the general manager of the Brauhaus for the past two years, but she has a longer history with the bar and grill.

“I started working here when I was 16, as a cook,” Knott said. She returned to the business after earning a degree in hotel and restaurant management at Alexandria Technical and Community College.

“I grew up in Lucan, and I love small towns,” Knott said. Those factors helped bring her back to the Brauhaus as a manager and also helped her decide to buy it. “It was an opportunity for me.”

A loan from the Southwest Initiative Foundation helped make it possible for Knott to do some renovations at the restaurant, like adding new flooring. SWIF has also offered additional education to help with running the restaurant, she said.

Knott’s Corner was closed for a short time in early January to put in the new floor but since then Knott said it’s been back to serving customers from the local coffee crowd to weekend diners. And that’s what she likes best.

‘I missed being here the two weeks we were closed,” Knott said.

Local and family connections are also strong at Knott’s Corner. Knott’s mother has worked at the restaurant as a server and in the kitchen, her sister and sister-in-law are servers and her mother-in-law is a cook.

“It’s very much a family business,” Knott said.

Knott said she hasn’t made a lot of changes to the restaurant’s menu and style. However, the restaurant has expanded its morning hours, which is good news for the morning coffee drinkers. Knott’s Corner has also introduced some new features, like a Thursday night steak special. Knott said that’s gone over well with customers.

Knott said her future plans for the restaurant include some special events to coincide with holidays and Lucan’s Pretzel Days festival, as well as some more future renovation projects.
