BOYS BASKETBALL: Dawson-Boyd back to winning ways, beats RCW
MONTEVIDEO – Despite coming into the Class A Section 3 Tournament with back-to-back losses, Dawson-Boyd quickly proved why it had earned the No. 1 seed in the North Division.
The Blackjacks won 21 straight games before falling twice right before the playoffs. And on Saturday in Montevideo, Dawson-Boyd was on top of its game, dismantling No. 8 seed Renville County West 79-32 to advance to the semifinals.
“Coming off a couple of losses, the last two games, we really wanted to set the tone for the playoffs in a good way,” Blackjack floor general Joey Lee said. “I thought we did that. Our first practice after losing, we beat each other up a little bit, got a little frustration out. That was good for us because we needed an intense practice.”
Dawson-Boyd worked its way to a 54-17 halftime lead, clicking on all cylinders.
“I thought we did a lot of good things (Saturday),” Lee said. “We took a charge. That was something we hadn’t done for awhile, so that was good. We had a lot of assists, too. We were moving the ball, making the extra pass. That’s something we want to do.
“We wanted to play together and be a balanced team and I thought we did a good job of that today.”
Lee contributed a game-high eight assists to go with four points and three steals. Michael Lee recorded a double-double for the Blackjacks with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Seven other players also collected points for the victory. Jess Hansen dropped in 14 points, while Zach Stratmoen had 12 and Kyler Collins seven. Noah Stelter chipped in six points, while Karson Lindblad, Cody Aafedt and Dalton Kostad added four points apiece.
“I was glad we were able to take care of business,” Dawson-Boyd head coach Cory Larson said. “We’ve had a good year, but this is a brand new season, so I was happy to see the guys come out and play the way they did.”
Despite their efforts, the Jaguars, who defeated ninth-seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg on Friday to advance to the quarterfinal game, couldn’t slow down the well-rounded Blackjacks.
“We wanted to feed off of what we did (Friday),” RCW head coach Matt Huhnerkoch said. “We had a pretty good performance. They guys played really well. We were really hoping that would carry over into (Saturday’s) game, but they are just a tough team. The two Lees are outstanding. Joey Lee makes everyone better. They aren’t a very good match for us because they are so big and physical.
“We tried to give them different looks, going from a zone to a man, but it really didn’t take effect.”
Huhnerkoch said the team will take some positives from the contest, however.
“This game shows the guys what it out there for solid teams,” he said. “They are a quality team and that’s who we want to model ourselves after in the future.”
Huhnerkoch is also encouraged for next season. The Jaguars return every player except for senior Oscar Barrera.
“We’re a young squad and we knew we were going to take some lumps,” he said. “We have some good things coming. The guys are pretty up-beat and are going to put some work in over the summer. We definitely think we’re going up the hill.”
Griffin Schaub led RCW (4-20 overall) with nine points, while Colin Thompson had seven.
Dawson-Boyd advances to the semifinals to face No 5 seed MACCRAY, who defeated Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 56-55 on Saturday, at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Southwest Minnesota State University.
“We have big goals, but we have to take it one game at a time,” Joey Lee said. “Our subsection is loaded this year.”
