Frerich receives medical research fellowship

Jason M. Frerich, the son of John W. Frerich of Marshall and a fourth-year medical student at The Chicago Medical School in Chicago, received a HHMI – NIH grant to conduct neuroscience research at the NIH in Bethesda, Md., between his third and fourth years of medical school. He published the results of his collaborative work June 25 as co-first author in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, titled “Histone deacetylase inhibitors are neuroprotective and preserve NGF-mediated cell survival following traumatic brain injury.” He also published additional work from that year in Nature Scientific Reports, titled “Tumor derived vasculogenesis in von Hippel-Lindau disease-associated tumors” and in the Journal of Neurosurgery, titled “De novo VHL germline mutation detected in a patient with mild clinical phenotype of von Hippel-Lindau disease.”

Frerich will begin his neurosurgical training July 1 at Emory University School of Medicine / Department of Neurological Surgery, Atlanta, Ga.

McVey named to SJU dean’s list

Adam McVey, son of Bruce and Laurie McVey of Marshall, has been named to the dean’s list for the 2013 fall semester at St. John’s University. McVey is a first-year chemistry major at SJU.

To be included on the dean’s list, students must have a semester grade point average of at least 3.80 and have completed 12 credits for which honor points (A, B, C, etc.) are awarded. Students included on the dean’s list cannot have any “unsatisfactory” or “incomplete” grades for that semester.

Area students named to CSB dean’s list

Six area students have been named to the dean’s list for the 2013 fall semester at the College of St. Benedict.

Claire Buysse, the daughter of Chuck and Sharon Buysse of Marshall, is a first-year social science major at CSB.

Nicole Noyes, the daughter of Ken and Janice Noyes of Marshall, is a senior biology major at CSB.

Stephanie Noyes, the daughter of Ken and Janice Noyes of Marshall, is a senior biology major at CSB.

  • Christina Pollock, the daughter of John and Kathy Pollock of Lynd, is a senior management major at CSB.

Margaret Roesler, the daughter of Bruce and Elizabeth Roesler of Marshall, is a senior English major at CSB.

Amanda Tate, the daughter of Jim and Mary Tate of Marshall, is a junior English major at CSB.

Siekmann on University of St. Thomas dean’s list

Lindsay Siekmann of Marshall is among the students named to the University of St. Thomas 2013 fall semester dean’s list. Students must post grade point averages of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale to be named to the dean’s list.
