BOYS BASKETBALL: D-B routs MACCRAY
MARSHALL – Top-seeded Dawson-Boyd stormed onto the court after halftime and took control of the game with an 18-2 run to start the second half, eventually winning the Class A Section 3 North Tournament contest 72-42 over No. 5 seed MACCRAY on Tuesday at Southwest Minnesota State University.
Having battled back to grab a 22-18 halftime lead, the Blackjacks used that momentum to open the second half with an 8-0 run, beginning with baskets in transition from Jess Hansen and Joey Lee, followed by a drive from Michael Lee and a reverse layup from Joey Lee, which gave Dawson-Boyd a 31-18 edge with 15 minutes and 29 seconds remaining in the game.
After a basket from the Wolverines’ Tyler Moffenbier, the Blackjacks continued their offensive explosion, pushing the lead to 20 points at the 12:15 mark. Baskets from Michael Lee, Noah Stelter and Zach Stratmoen stretched the team’s advantage to 48-22.
“It was good to get the win and move on,” Michael Lee said. “We didn’t really move the ball very well right away and we kind of got off to a slow start. Then we started getting some points and got up by four at halftime. We really took off in transition in the second half. We got a lead and kept playing. It felt good to get out and run.”
Lee contributed a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds in the matchup. Joey Lee chipped in 16 points, while Stelter had 13.
“I think we got a good contribution out of everybody in the second half, both offensively and defensively,” Dawson-Boyd head coach Cory Larson said. “That makes a big difference this time of the season.”
MACCRAY started to pick up some momentum with just under eight minutes to play, when Jacob Aviles sunk a basket and Brady Madsen knocked down a 3-pointer, but Hansen drained a basket from behind the arc to stop the run. Carter Asche, the Wolveines’ leading scorer this season, collected his fourth foul of the night a few seconds later. Larson was pleased that the Blackjack defense held Asche to nine points in the contest.
“We wanted to minimize the amount of space Asche got once he caught the ball,” Larson said. “We wanted to make it tough for him and for (Bailey) Boike as well. I think Joey and Michael did a good job individually, but it takes a team effort to hold a kid like Carter Asche to single digits.”
Dawson-Boyd had to come from behind the opening half after MACCRAY took an early 11-5 lead. Michael Lee recorded eight of the first 10 points for the Blackjacks and never let up. After Lee went 2-for-2 at the line, Joey Lee scored on a rebound putback to give Dawson-Boyd a 14-13 edge at the 7:08 mark.
After Asche netted a 3-pointer from the left baseline for the Wolverines, the Blackjacks closed out the first half with a 6-0 run.
“They stayed focused and didn’t get frustrated,” Larson said. “They understand that it’s a 36-minute game. We started to attack and run the floor. It certainly helps when you knock down some shots. Then you have to have that energy. Yah, we got some stops in the first half, but we weren’t backing them up with scores.”
Dawson-Boyd will now face Canby in the Class A Section 3 North championship at 8 p.m. Friday at Southwest Minnesota State University. Michael Lee shared some thoughts about the next matchup.
“We have to keep bringing our transition game,” he said. “I don’t think anyone can run with us if we do it consistently. We’re pretty athletic. We also need to bring a high energy level, especially at the beginning of the game.”
