Looking for the perfect prom dress
MARSHALL – For girls needing prom dresses and accessories but are short on funds, help is here. Operation Prom Dress is under way.
High school girls can find a prom dress from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Marshall High School fine arts building foyer. Sign up at email@example.com. The dresses and accessories are for any girl who is financial unable to attend prom. Free dresses, shoes, accessories, hair, nails and makeup will be offered.
More than 100 girls participated last year from Lincoln, Lyon and Murray counties, said event organizer Terrie Lendt, from the charitable organization Fields of Grace.
Lendt said she learned from last year what worked and what didn’t. There will be some changes made from last year’s event, which was the first time it took place in Marshall.
“It will be more like the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Operation Prom Dress,” she said.
“Last year the girls came and went,” she said. “This year there will be stations set up. There will be a pampering session. Escape Spa is teaching us how to do hand massaging.”
There will be an opportunity for girls to sign up for hair styling, makeup and nail appointments on prom day.
“Girls should call and cancel three days beforehand if they are not going to use the service,” Lendt said.
About 30 volunteers will help girls select dresses and be fitted for them. Some dresses will need alterations.
Refreshments and a time for fellowship will also take place, she said.
“If anyone wanted to talk, they can,” she said. “We want to be encouraging for them, give encouraging advice, just let them know that there are people out there who care about them.”
At the Operation Prom Dress event, the girls will leave with a goodie bag filled with coupons from stores such as Tip Top Tux, Mr. Cool’s and Treasured Times.
“They will give prom-related discounts,” she said. “Also, Marshall Floral and Hy-Vee will give coupons for discounts on corsages.”
Lendt hopes, in addition to receiving prom dresses and accessories, that the girls will make new friendships at the event.
“It’s often more fun to go to prom in a group,” she said.
The event is sponsored by Fields of Grace, Midwest Cleaners, Marshall Floral and Carrow’s Cleaners of Marshall.
After the dresses are chosen, they will be cleaned or if they need to be altered or repaired, the dresses will be cleaned. Lendt is still accepting dresses for donation by contacting her at firstname.lastname@example.org or 530-0573. She has about 300 so far for the girls to choose from.
