Short takes for March 14
Following a former Mustang
We’ll all be rooting for the Gophers men’s basketball team the rest of the month – whether its in the Big Ten Tournament, the NCAA Tournament, or the NIT, but there’s another Big Ten team worth keeping your eye on this weekend and into next: Nebraska, coached by former Mustangs coach Tim Miles. Miles, who enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at SMSU, for some reason has to share this year’s conference Coach of the Year award, but that doesn’t take away from what he has accomplished with a team that was picked by many to finish at the bottom of the Big Ten this year. His Cornhuskers went 11-7 in a tough Big Ten this year and earned the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which concludes Sunday. Many people could see how talented a coach Miles is and how much he gets out of his players during his stint in Marshall, and now he’s proving it all over again at the highest level of college basketball.
More March madness
There may be signs of spring outside, but we’re still in winter season mode when it comes to high school sports. The Marshall boys basketball team took the court at Williams Arena on Wednesday in the first round of the 2014 Minnesota State High School League Boys Basketball Tournament, and the Canby Lancers did the same Thursday. Canby High School has a celebrated wrestling tradition and isn’t known for its basketball, so it’s nice to see the boys hoops team make it to the state tournament. The last time that happened: 1951.
