SLAYTON – Services for Bruce Edward Giefer, 66, of Slayton are at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton. Burial is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday. Military honors accorded by the Westbrook VFW Post, the Slayton American Legion Post and the Slayton VFW Post. Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton is entrusted with arrangements.
He died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at his home in Slayton.
He was born Aug. 16, 1947, in Slayton, to Jerome (Bob) and Lillian Walther Giefer. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps June 30, 1965. He served as a sergeant in the Special Forces Combat Recon Division. While serving in Vietnam, he took part in many covert missions. He received many honors such as the Presidential Unit Citation, the Silver Star, which he received twice, the Bronze Star, which he also received twice and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged April 18, 1969.
Survivors include his wife, Martha of Slayton; children, Aimee Blomme of Marshall, Sarah Kirchner of Duluth and Grant of Marshall; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and siblings, Lavonne McBride of Atlanta, Ga., Douglas of Mankato and Jerome of Korea.
