GIRLS BASKETBALL: Patriots turn back Vikings in Class A

MINNEAPOLIS – Shelby Stienessen and Molly Hennen put No. 1-seeded Minneota in a position to rally, but the unseeded Win-E-Mac Patriots held off the Vikings 61-53 to win the MSHSL Class A Girls Basketball State Tournament championship Saturday at Williams Arena.

Stienessen and Hennen made back-to-back 3-pointers to trim Win-E-Mac’s lead to 52-50 with 3 1/2 minutes left, but the Patriots captured the title by scoring the next nine points.

Win-E-Mac, a team that has converted its free throws at a rate of 61 percent this season, made 5 of 6 attempts at the charity stripe during the final 62 seconds.
