Phyllis Deslauriers

CANBY – Mass of Christian Burial for Phyllis Deslauriers, 84, of Canby, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday at Birk Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 9-10 a.m. at the funeral home followed with procession to the church for mass. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Canby. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to donor’s choice.

She died Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Phyllis Ann Ruppert was born Dec. 19, 1929, in Slayton, to John and Theresa (Reiter) Ruppert. She received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Currie. In 1947, she graduated from Immaculate Heart of Mary School and she was the salutatorian of her class. After graduation, Phyllis started dating Norbert Deslauriers. While in Currie, Norbert farmed and Phyllis worked at the Paal Department Store from 1947-52. On April 15, 1952, she married Norbert at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Currie. They continued to live in the Currie area until 1956, which is when they relocated their family to a farm north of Canby.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and the 40 & 8 Auxiliary. Phyllis was a very devout Catholic and was active as a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Council for Catholic Women in Canby and the Catholic Daughters of America in Currie. Phyllis was KDMA’s Mother of the Year, she weaved more than 6,000 rugs, made homemade soap, enjoyed crocheting and attending Saturday night dancing at the Gary American Legion with Norbert. She enjoyed “Monday Night Raw” and “Friday Night Smackdown.” Phyllis was a devoted wife of 61 years, mother, grandmother and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Norbert and her entire family.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Norbert; sons, Myron (and Lenae), Craig (and Kirstian), Robert (and Julie) and Donald (and Tammy); daughters, Renee Schwebach, Theresa Bly, Jayne (and Cal) Jeremiason, Madonna Andrews, Karen (and Michael) Bekaert, Sarah Deslauriers (and friend, Tom Sherman), Norberta Bekaert (and friend, Leigh Mellendorf), Ann (and Larry) Botten and Catherine (and Perry) Fink; 35 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin (and JoEllyn) Ruppert; sister-in-law, Ethel Madson and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Joseph; daughter, Lucy; son-in-laws, Jim Schwebach and Tom Bly; grandson, Steve Bly.
