NCAA SOFTBALL: Bulldogs take twin-bill from Mustangs
MARSHALL – One day after playing the second longest game in Southwest Minnesota State softball history, the Mustangs suffered a sweep at the hands of Minnesota-Duluth.
They dropped the first game 10-3 and the second game 7-4.
Mustangs coach Jamie Dunn felt as if fatigue and a hangover from yesterdays game may have played a factor.
“We just couldn’t seem to get into any kind of rhythm,” Dunn said. “I don’t know if it was from playing 15 innings yesterday. I think it was maybe a little harder to get going. We couldn’t really make adjustments at the plate.”
Alysse Luttman led the Mustangs on the offensive end with three RBI while Karmann Carroll added two RBI on the day and Jazmyne Neely had one RBI.
Despite the loss, Dunn was impressed with the way Luttman produced at the plate.
“She had a great game,” Dunn said. “She made the adjustments that we asked her to do and she got up there and was determined to put the ball in play. Alysse isn’t afraid of anybody and that’s the kind of mentality that I want all our girls to approach an at-bat with.”
It was the defensive side of the ball that the Mustangs found some struggles as Alex O’Connor pitched 6 1/3 innings in the opening game and allowed seven runs on 11 hits while walking four. O’Connor did manage to strike out four in the first game.
In the second game, O’Connor pitched the full seven innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits while walking five, but did strike out seven.
The Mustangs trailed 4-1 after the first inning of Game 2 before rallying back to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth. The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the 5th and one more run in the sixth to pull away.
The Bulldogs picked up the win in the second game despite committing three errors on the afternoon.
Cayli Sadler pitched five of the seven innings in the first game for the Bulldogs and struck out four while walking two and giving up five hits and just one run. Sam Hartmann finished the final two innings, giving up five hits while walking one, striking out one and allowing two runs.
In the second game, Salder went the distance, striking out five while walking none and wllowing four runs (two earned on six hits).
She also paced the offense, hitting for three RBI in each contest.
