PREP BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD: MHS triumphs at Tracy

TRACY – Five area track and field teams took advantage of pleasant weather to open the outdoor season at the Panther I meet Tuesday in Tracy.

Marshall swept the team titles, recording 192 points in the girls competition, followed by Canby/Minneota/Lincoln HI (98), Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (91), Montevideo (62), Murray County Central (50), Lakeview (43) and Fulda (21). On the boys side, Marshall won with 146 points, followed by Montevideo (115), CML (81), MCC (73), Fulda (69), Lakeview (39) and TMB (33).

“I like that we had a nice spread of through all of our events,” Marshall girls coach Marie Sample said. “We got points in a lot of events. We’ve gotten a lot of first and seconds, which I’m really excited about considering we can only put two athletes in each event except for field events.”

Sarah Buysse captured three individual first-place finishes, topping the field in the 100-meter dash (12.84 seconds), 200 dash (27.15) and 400 dash (1:04.56). Celeste Werner took first in both the shot put (31-feet-6 inches) and the discus (100-1). Haley Bennett was second in the discus (99-0) and four in the shot put (29-0) for the Tigers.

“The times are really good,” Sample said. “Granted, we got a beautiful day out here, but the times are great. We’ve been in the gym a lot, so to be where we’re at right now, it’s really good. We’re excited to see how much more we can improve over the next few weeks.”

Marshall’s Rachel Miller tied for first in the pole vault (7-6), while Nichole Sample took first in the 800 run (2:28). Jackie Turner won the 3,200 run (11:54), while Sydney Griffin was first in triple jump (32-3.5) and second in the long jump (14-10).

The Tigers also won the 3,200 relay (10:18.66), behind the effort of Claire Boersma, Syd Blomme, Jenna Christianson and Turner.

“What we did this fall in cross country is really carrying over to track,” Coach Sample said. “And we’re really deep. We have a few that are in softball, but the girls that are with us, really want to make that team in the fall. I think we’re going to be about 16 deep. There’s that many girls that are fighting for seven spots. And so, we’re seeing a lot of good things with the track season, too.”

Sample said she appreciates that Turner, as a sophomore, has been a good role model for the younger athletes, the distance runners in particular.

“Jackie Turner has been a great leader,” she said. “She’s really banded those young kids together like a mama duck. She takes care of them and they look up to her. It’s fun.”

Marshall also claimed the 400 relay (55.85), which included Sam Giannelli, Rose Anderson, Kendra Soupir and Ellie Nordin.

“I try to take the pressure off of them by telling them that if they come and give everything you have every time you step on the track, then that is good enough,” Coach Sample said. “You’ll never fail.”

Andrew Bell paced Marshall with two first-place finishes. Bell won the 1,600 run in 4:52, followed by teammate Chad DeAustin, who finished second (5:00.46). Bell also won the 3,200 run (10:30), while DeAustin took first in the 800 run (2:11.90).

At this meet, we’ve been able to score quite a bit,” Marshall boys coach Mike Jacobs said. “And their times are going to get better. As I look around, there are some good things happening. The kids are pretty fired up. Probably the thing right now, is we have a lot of question marks. But we had times that were comparable to the end of the year, so we’re starting out really nice in that regard.”

Zach Drum picked up two individual wins as well, taking first in the long jump (19-3) and the triple jump (40-5). Sam Marshall added a first-place finish in the 200 dash (23.64) and second-place finish in the 100 dash (11.63).

“Zach had a nice start to the year in the long jump,” Jacobs said. “We also look like we’re going to be a little bit stronger in the relays.”

Danny West had a good showing in the 110 hurdles, taking third place (16.78).

“Danny looked really strong in the 110 hurdles, especially for it being the first time out there this year,” Jacobs said. “He hovered in the 17s for a long time last year, so to start out at that is really encouraging.”

Morgan Merritt collected a large number of points for CML, taking first in the 100 hurdles (17.22) and 300 hurdles (48.25) along with grabbing a third-place finish in the 200 dash (28.13).

Megan Travis took second in the high jump (4-6), while Kalli Jelen was second in the 400 dash (1:06.64). Leah Jessen finished second in the 3,200 run (12:44).

Behind the effort of Leah Jessen, Jelen, Sydney Sisk and Emily Gillingham, the Lancers also took second in the 3,200 relay (10:44.71).

On the boys side, Nathan Pavek had a standout day, winning the 110 hurdles (16.34), 300 hurdles (42.07) and the high jump (5-8).

CML won the 3,200 relay in 8:57.97, with Travis Dinius, McKinley Johansen, Wyatt Johansen and Nathan Cooper competing. Behind the team of Billy Deslauriers, McKinley Johansen, Dinius and Cooper, the Lancers also won the 1,600 relay in 3:45.

TMB captured first-place in the 800 relay (1:55.34), which included Kendra Nelson, Kaylee Kirk, Taylor Schmidt and Kendra Ludeman. Sammie Gervais won the high jump (4-8), while Anna Peterson tied for first in the pole vault (7-6).

“I thought the meet went really well,” TMB coach Marie Hanson said. “Everyone competed well. Sam placed first in the high jump, which was nice to see. I didn’t know how that was going to go. She got her foot taken care of recently, so there’s some resolution going with that.”

Kassidy Przymus added a second-place finish in the shot put (31-5) and third-place finish in the discus (93-4) for the Panthers, while Ludeman was also second in the triple jump (32-1) and anchored the 1,600 relay team that finished second. Alyssa Gleis took third in the 800, completing the race in 2:37.70.

” Kassidy placed really well in both the shot and disc,” Hanson said. “It was a good place to start. Kendra Ludeman had a good day. She anchored our 4×200 that won and our 4×400 that got second and those were tough races.”

Josh Kirk picked up a second-place finish for TMB in the long jump (18-8.5), while Asa Nelson was fourth in the pole vault (9-6). Scott Lanoue was fifth in pole vault (9-6), while Nathan Wieme was sixth (9-0).

“On the boys side, we had some good performances,” Hanson said. “It’s kind of a different team this year. We’re missing a couple of people from injuries. Our pole vaulters did well. That was fun to see.”

Hannah Schmidt collected top honors in the long jump (15-4.5) for MCC. Paris Thomas took second in the 300 hurdles (51.95), while Sierra VanIperen was second in the 800 run (2:34.90) and Nicole Thovson was second in the 100 dash (13.49).

“It was nice to get times and have a good workout,” MCC girls coach Dominick Damm said. “This is the first time we’ve gotten to do quite a few of our field events, so it was nice to throw and just get on the runways. No performance completely stuck out, but we had a lot of kids who had really good times. We had a couple of girls who picked up right where they left off last year, so that’s a good sign. I think everybody is just excited to be out here competing.”

MCC’s Tyler Scotting topped the competition in the shot put (48-8) and the 100 dash (10.52) along with finishing second in the 300 hurdles (43.59). Logan Kluis took second place in the triple jump (36-2.5). The Rebels took second in the 3,200 relay, behind the effort of Patrick Platt, Cole Bassett, Jack Erickson and Andy Garza, and second in the 400 relay, which included Dakota Thunderhawk, Mason Whitehead, Kluis and Andrew Foreman.

“For the most part, I’m pretty happy about our performances,” MCC boys coach Tim Bobeldyk said. “This was a good start to the outdoor season.”

Stephanie Pickthorn earned a third-place finish for Lakeview in the 100 hurdles (18.72) and the 300 hurdles (53.12), while Samara Plotz was third in the 100 dash (13.72). Plotz also ran a leg of the third-place 400 relay team (57.32).

The Laker boys were led by Grant Taylor, who won the 400 dash (52.60). Cory Schreier took third in the shot put (42-5). Behind athletes Juan Garcia, Seth Goepferich, Jaden Hoffman and Taylor, Lakeview took third in the 1,600 relay (3:49.4) and third in the 3,200 relay (9:27.76), which included Goepferich, Isaac Loe, Taylor and Braden French.

“We’ve had some great times,” Lakeview coach Erik Lundberg said. “The boys took 52 seconds off their 4×800 relay time, which was encouraging. It was a good meet.”
