YOUTH WRESTLING: Tigers place eighth at state

ROCHESTER – The Marshall-Lakeview Tigers placed eighth among 32 teams at the Northland Youth Wrestling Associaton Dual Team State Tournament last weekend.

The Tigers started out strong in their bracket with a wins over Hutchinson 29-27 and Belgrade/Brooten/Elrosa 44-31 before losing a close match to Delano 33-31 in the bracket championship.

A 2-1 record in the bracket, put Marshall-Lakeview in Pool 2 with a chance to place as high as fifth. The Tigers couldn’t bounce back, losing to Waseca 43-26 and Blue Earth Area 44-32 to place eighth overall.

Wrestling undefeated in the team competition for Marshall-Lakeview were Landon Marthaler and Grant Louwagie, both with 5-0 records. The Tigers finished the year with a 19-5 record.

At the NYWA Individual State Tournament, Marshall-Lakeview sent 16 wrestlers out on the mat, and nine of them earned a spot on the podium by placing in the top six of their age and weight class. Tigers who placed included Wyatt Martin (second), Dylan Louwagie (third), Landon Marthaler (fifth), Lincoln Christenson (fifth), Jaiden Bahr (fifth), Keynan Coequyt (sixth), Joshua Kraft (sixth), Tate Condezo (sixth) and Hailey Bahr (sixth).

Marshall-Lakeview wrestlers who qualified for the individual state tournament but didn’t place were Brody Wixon, Aiden Mattison, Spencer Wambeke, Grant Louwagie, Cole Felcyn, Eli Cole and Zack Felcyn.

At the NYWA Invitational State Tournament, Marshall-Lakeview sent seven wrestlers with four of them placing in the top six. Brett Regnier was the invite champion by going 3-0. Other placers were Brenden Weller (second), Noah Jensen (third) and Garett Regnier (fifth). Tigers who also competed in the invitational tournament but didn’t place were Hsa La Eh, Jacob Hughes and Jackson Hughes.
