Oaxaca, Shahin medal at state speech

MARSHALL – Jessica Oaxaca became a two-time state medal winner with an eighth-place finish in Drama at the 2014 Minnesota State High School Speech Tournament on Friday.

Oaxaca was a state champion in Extemporaneous Speaking a year ago. This was her third trip to state.

“It’s just an honor to be at state,” Oaxaca said Friday. “I feel like I came a long way from last year, especially in this category. I definitely think I’ve grown more and have achieved so much more in this category.”

Also medaling for Marshall on Friday was junior Malak Shahin, who was fifth overall in Great Speeches.

“I felt like my finals performance was definitely the best of the day,” she said. “I was really happy with it no matter what place I would’ve gotten.”

Competing at state this year for Marshall were Oaxaca, drama; Shahin, great speeches; Emily Mortier, storytelling; Skylar Breczinski, prose; and Lestat Clemmer and Ariel Smith, duo.

“Earning those medals is a prestigious thing for our team,” Marshall coach Rick Purrington said. “Earning a medal is a very high honor.”
