NCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL: Welk resigns to coach hoops at SCSU
MARSHALL – Southwest Minnesota State University head men’s basketball coach Brad Bigler announced the resignation of assistant men’s basketball coach Chad Welk on Friday. Welk has accepted the position of assistant men’s basketball coach at St. Cloud State University.
“We are thankful for Chad committing to us in August last year. Our friendship is more than just coaching basketball,” Bigler said. “This decision did not come as a surprise. Chad, Matt (new SCSU head coach) and I have been in dialogue for a while and this is a great situation for Chad and his family. This past year was tough on Chad living away from his family. We are grateful for his time here. His transition with the guys last year almost seemed too easy. He will be a great fit at St. Cloud State University.”
Welk joined the SMSU staff last August and helped the Mustangs advance to the semifinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament and finish with an overall record of 19-12. Prior to SMSU, he spent eight seasons at Concordia-St. Paul.
“I want to thank Brad Bigler, Chris Hmielewski, the basketball players and staff, and both the SMSU and Marshall communities for an incredible experience with the men’s basketball program,” Welk said. “I am eternally indebted to each of you accepting me into your program and culture. You will never know the positive impact you had on me both from a career and a personal standpoint.”
