PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Marshall dominates only home invitational

MARSHALL – Frigid conditions weren’t enough to hold down the Marshall track and field teams as they swept the home meet Tuesday afternoon. The boys earned 125 team points while the girls earned 148.33 to earn the team titles.

Sarah Buysse secured three individual medals, winning the open 100-meter dash (13.57 seconds), 200 dash (28.39) and 400 dash (1:03.85).

“It could have been better but it was just so cold today,” Sarah Buysse said. “I just wanted to keep warm and be prepared to run in this weather since I knew it was going to be brutal.”

The Marshall girls picked up victories in all four of the meet’s relay events. In the 400-meter relay, the team of Kendra Soupir, Rose Anderson, Belle Dieken and Samantha Giannelli recorded a winning time of 55.26. Soupir, Dieken, Giannelli also won the 800 relay along with teammate Hannah Bock in a time of 1:56.

With a time of 4:27, Claire Boersma, Jenna Christianson, Melodee Grant and Nichole Sample claimed the 1,600 relay title. Boersma, Christianson and Sample also won the 3,200 relay with a time of 10:05.35 along with teammate Jackie Turner.

Boersma and Turner also picked up individual victories in the open 1,600 (5:25) and 3,200 (11:54) runs, respectively.

“Our distance runners had an amazing day,” Marshall girls coach Marie Sample said. “It was a smaller meet with smaller schools but I always tell the kids to go against the clock and just work to improve no matter who you’re competing against.”

Rachel Miller won the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.75 and Grant won the 300 hurdles in 53.59.

In the field events, Sydney Griffin won triple jump with a leap of 34-3 and Meghann Naughton cleared 7-0 to win pole vault. Marshall also swept the throws with Haley Bennett winning discus with a throw of 97-8 and Celeste Werner throwing 33-2 to win the shot put.

Sam Marshall, Andrew Bell, Zach Drum and Ryan Schultz led the Tigers on the boys side, earning two individual victories each and were members of the winning 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:51.

Marshall ran an 11.85 in the 100 and a 24.06 in the 200 to win both events.

Bell took first in the 800 and 1,600 runs with times of 2:06 and 4:46, respectively.

With a leap of 38-11 in triple jump and 19-2 1/2 long jump , Drum was able to win both events. Schultz took the title in the high jump, clearing 5-10, and the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.42.

Also earning first-place finishes was Danny West in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.86 and Chase VanKeulen in the 3,200 run with a time of 11:08.

“I am glad we we got a meet in, tha’ts the important thing for us right now,” Marshall boys coach Mike Jacob said. “I don’t think anyone expected, with the cool temperatures, that we were going to have any record breaking times.”

Other area schools competing in the meet included Lakeview and Yellow Medicine East. From Lakeview, Cory Schreier won the boys shot put with a throw of 43-10 1/2 and Maddie Fenske won the 800 in 2:42.

The Sting had individual titles from Sam Lecy in girls high jump, clearing 4-8 and Wyatt Hatch making 11-0 in pole vault. Jacob Pederson won the boys 400 in 53.24 and Josh Hoemenmann threw 133-3 in discus.
