PREP BASEBALL: Tigers rip Cardinals

MARSHALL – The Tigers stayed undefeated as they made it a long afternoon for the Redwood Valley Cardinals, sweeping a Southwest Conference doubleheader on Thursday at American Legion Field.

Marshall won the first game 15-0 and the second game 23-3. The Cardinals gave the Tigers plenty of help as they committed two errors in the first contest and three in the second.

Redwood Valley coach Aaron Ferrier has a young squad that he is waiting to come around on the fundamentals.

“The bottom line is, when you play a good team, you have to make them earn it,” Ferrier said. “We didn’t do that today. We made them put the ball in play and we didn’t do a very good job of fielding the ball. It led to a lot of extra at-bats and a lot of unearned runs. That’s going to be something we’re going to continue to work on.”

Marshall moved up to No. 5 in Class 2A baseball poll on Wednesday and wasted no time in proving why it is worthy of the spot. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 64-6 in their last five games since they were last challenged during a 4-1 victory over West Fargo, the state runner-up from North Dakota last season, on April 19.

Marshall coach Chace Pollock knows his guys have to stay sharp for every game, no matter the opponent.

“We need to be ready to go, mentally, every game,” Pollock said. “How we approach every game should be the same. Something we preach as coaches is that every time we come out, everything should be the same. It’s a crazy game. Surprises can happen.”

Game 1

Noah Winkleman, Brad Bahlmann and Riley Sharbono lead the way offensively with two RBI each. Noah Winkleman also scored two runs as he went 2-for-3 from the plate, while Sharbono went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and scored two runs. Bahlmann went 2-for-3 and crossed the plate once.

The Tigers also got RBI from Bryce Johnson, Brent Andries, Scott Buss, Mason Campion and Adam Kovash. Connor Winkleman, Sharbono and Noah Winkleman all finished the game with doubles.

Carl Douglas got the start on the mound and went four innings as he allowed three hits and two walks while striking out two. Connor Messman threw the final inning and struck out one while walking one.

Game 2

Drew Hmielewski, Noah Winkleman and Sharbono brought their bats, each rendering four RBI to go with two from Bryce Johnson, Dylan Criquet-Danielson and Derek Rasmussen. Alex Marks, Quinton Johnson, Scott Buss, Adam Kovash and Nate Hoeft also recorded RBI. Sharbono and Kovash recorded doubles in the game.

Hmielewski got the start on the mound for the Tigers and went three innings while striking out five and recording just one walk. He gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits.

Looking Ahead

The road is going to get tougher for the Tigers as they travel to Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta at 4:30 p.m. today and take on the 5-1 Tigers before traveling to Luverne for a double-header on Tuesday. Luverne is 8-1 and currently sits one spot above Marshall in the 2A standings.

With tough games ahead, Pollock needs his team to stay focused.

“We’re not going to look too far ahead or too far behind on our schedule,” Pollock said. “We have to worry about Morris area tomorrow. They’ve been playing really good baseball lately. We have to understand the importance of this game and putting together a good game so we can hopefully secure the No. 1 seed in the North. That’s all we can control.”
