PREP BOYS AND GIRLS GOLF: Tigers break course record during win over New Ulm

MARSHALL – Never tell the Marshall girls golf team to “jump into the lake.”

The Tigers set a course record in shooting a 338 during a 66-stroke victory over New Ulm on Monday. After which, the MHS girls celebrated by frolicking in a water hazard at Marshall Golf Club.

Hanna Peterson continued her strong play, by posting a 78 to score a team low.

Kirsten Webskowski finished with her season-best 85 and was followed by Jessica Blanchard with an 87, Kami Love with an 88, Mallory Griffin with a 94 and Olivia Peterson followed with her best score of the season with a 101.

“We finally all gelled at the same time,” Marshall girls coach Nancy Blanchard said. “A lot of what these girls are improving on is a belief thing. They are finally starting to believe that they are good enough. In golf, it takes awhile to get your perception of how you play.”

Corinne McKeeth finished with the lowest New Ulm score with an 83.

On the boys side, the Tigers finished with a 305 and they snuck past New Ulm, who had a 310.

Marshall coach Allen Lucht was happy with the win, but has seen his team play better.

“Our boys were a bit shaky at times,” Lucht said. “They have to settle down. The boys are trying to conquer the course instead of just play the course and sometimes that will just slap you in the face.”

Lucht felt the fact that the Tigers had one last chance to break the course record got in their head a little and may have affected their play.

Brent Haukom and Jacob Baker topped the team scores with a 76 while Matt Bennett followed with a 77.

Matt Christianson also tallied a 77 to go with a 79 from John Wyffels and a 79 from Alex Buysse.

Kelton Schmitz and Jonah Cooper were the two lowest scorers from New Ulm with a 74 and 77, respectively.
