Weather a mixed bag for fishing opener
LAKE SHETEK – The wind didn’t stop fishing enthusiasts from casting a line out for the fishing opener Saturday.
The day started off with decent weather, but thunderstorms in the afternoon pushed most anglers off the lake. People that were fishing off the dikes and shores of Lake Shetek reported not having much luck with the fish but still enjoyed the chance to get outside and enjoy the day.
Jeremy Johnson of Marshall took his kids, Merron and Caden, out fishing on the public dock off of Valhalla. They didn’t have much luck with their bobber rigs and crappie minnows, but they still appreciated the chance to take in the warm weather.
“It’s a good day to be outside after the long, cold winter,” Johnson said.
As the skies grew dark to the south, boats started coming in from the lake at the public access point near the floating dock. Kerry Fink of Luverne said that he had been out on Current Lake before coming to Shetek and not catching anything but still enjoyed the chance to fish.
“It would just be nice to get rid of the wind,” Fink said.
Doug Evans of Melrose was also getting his boat back on the trailer Saturday afternoon before the storm hit.
“It was at least a nice day for a boat ride,” Evans said. “We got to test it out and make sure that everything still works.”
