PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Johnson pitches two-hitter in his first varsity start

SLAYTON – Murray County Central got a big performance from freshman pitcher Kellen Johnson, who made his first career varsity start. Johnson struck out six batters while walking four in five innings of work.

He had plenty of run support as Jordan Ahlers drove in five runs while TJ Van Peursem and Mitchell Reinsma each added an RBI.

Jordan Dingman and Tony Sieve each had one hit for the Dragons.

Renville County West 20, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 3

TRACY – Renville County West earned a 20-3 victory over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Wednesday night. The Jaguars scored 17 runs in the second inning en route to a five-inning victory.

Brady Holwerda finished the game with four RBI while Colin Thompson and Hyaden Johnson each had three RBI. Jesse Miller, Griffin Schaub and Brody Elferling each had one.

Taylor Carlson had two RBI for TMB while Jordan Towe finished with one. Thompson picked up the win on the mound, striking out six while walking just three. Riley Steffes took the loss, striking out four while walking just one. TMB moves to 4-7 on the season and will take on Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg today at 4:30 p.m. while Renville County West moves to 7-3 and will take on MACCRAY next.

Murray County Central 14, Adrian 3

SLAYTON – Murray County Central cruised to a 14-3 win over Adrian Area on Wednesday.

The Rebels got two RBI from Kenda Blomgren and two from Kristi Bose, who hit a double and a triple. Bose also took the pitching win as she struck out six and walked just two in five innings of work.

Adrain Area got one RBI from Heidi Nolte, as she finished with two hits and Jodi Bents had one hit.

Brooke Grussing took the loss for Adrian Area, walking eight while striking out just five. With the win, MCC moves to 10-9 on the season with their last scheduled game against Southwestern United at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Benson Invitational

BENSON – Dawson-Boyd and Yellow Medicine East traveled to Benson and played in the Benson Invitational Wednesday. The Blackjacks took home the win on the boys side, shooting a 325, edging Minnewaska Area by one stroke. Easton Popma finished third overall with an 80 for DB. Cameron Kemen finished with an 82 while Christian Thoen tallied an 84.

Spencer Erickson (87) and Dalton Palmer (88) rounded out the day for the Blackjacks.

The Sting finished fifth overall, shooting a 358. Mitch MCosh and Charles Blue each had an 84 on the day while Sam Jans finished with a 92 and Grant Lalim had a 98.

On the girls side, it was Litchfield coming away with the win, shooting a 368 while YME was sixth with a 426 and DB was 7th with a 462. Erica Moritz shot a 95 to lead YME. She was followed by Leah Jeseritz (101), Cassie Thelen (119) and Megan Larson (119). DB was lead by Taylor Loose with a 98 while Tracy Polzine shot a 114, Raeanna Tuff shot a 116 and Katheryn Madson shot a 124.
