PREP TRACK AND FIELD: CML sweeps Camden titles

COTTONWOOD – Despite the fact that times, heights and distances were negatively affected by the 45-degree temperatures, the Camden Conference Track and Field meet was extremely competitive Thursday in Cottonwood.

The Canby-Minneota-Lincoln HI girls edged Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd 140.4 to 139.49. Tracy-Milroy-Balaton took third with 93 points, followed by MACCRAY/Renville County Central (62), Central Minnesota Christian (36), Hendricks (33.5), Lakeview (29.5) and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (23).

“The Lac qui Parle Valley/DB girls won this meet last year, but we want revenge this year,” CML athlete Morgan Merritt said about two-thirds of the way through the meet. “I think it’ll be close. TMB is in first right now, which is surprising because we were expecting it to be LQPV-DB. They seem to succeed in places we struggle and we definitely succeed in places they struggle, so it’s very even. I’m really impressed with our team, though.”

Merritt, who won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.80 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 48.30, was also complimentary towards the Lancer boys, who won the Camden Conference again this year.

“The boys are doing really well,” she said.

The CML boys team dominated the competition, compiling 158 points, followed by LQPV/DB (109), TMB (77.5), Lakeview (77), CMCS (51.5), MACCRAY/RCW (49) and RTR (22).

Merritt is hoping to return to state this year, having advanced in the 100 hurdles last year.

“(Thursday), I struggled in the 100 hurdles, but it was cold. It was an okay time. I want to get under 16 seconds, but the weather hasn’t been cooperating with me. I felt really good in the 300 hurdles, though. I didn’t stutter-step at all, so that was good. I ran a 48.30, which is one of my better races. I want to go to state in both of the hurdles.”

Merritt also contributed a pair of second-place finishes, in the 200 dash (27.50) and the long jump (16-2). Morgan Citterman won the shot put with a 34-5.50 effort. CML’s 3,200 relay also took first (10:42.50) behind the teamwork of Natalie Dinius, Emily Gillingham, Sydney Sisk and Kalli Jelen.

The Eagles captured a number of first-place finishes, including Jacinta Roggenbuck’s wins in the 100 (12.60), 200 (26.60) and 400 (1:00.70) dash events and Alaysia Freetly’s victories in the 800 meters (2:32.70) and 1,600 run (5:36.20).

“My 800 race was alright, but it was really cold,” Freetly said. “My lungs definitely get a lot more tired and my legs get a lot tighter than usual. It takes a lot of mental toughness for everyone to push through that. My time wasn’t too great in the 1,600, but I think it was because of the weather.”

Freetly hopes to return to state in the 1,600 again this year.

“I’m feeling good about my chances so far,” she said. “I want my times to be a little lower, but I think I’ll get there.”

Freetly said she was also proud of her team’s effort at the conference meet.

“We’re doing good,” Freetly said. “A lot of girls are pulling through where we need them, so that’s good.”

The TMB girls won five events at the Camden meet. Kassidy Przymus took first in the discus (100-4), Sammie Gervais was first in the high jump (4-11) and Anna Peterson finished first in the pole vault (7-0).

Gervais, Kaylee Kirk, Taylor Schmidt and Kendra Ludeman also contributed a win for the Panthers in the 800 relay (1:55.30). Kirk, Ludeman, Schmidt and Alyssa Gleis also teamed up to win the 1,600 relay (4:29.30).

Hendricks collected a win from Joise Olsen in the 3,200 run (12:28.90).

RTR’s Jada Carr won the triple jump with a leap of 33-11.5.

On the boys side, Nathan Pavek won the 110 hurdles (15.80) and the 300 hurdles (44.20) for CML. Nathan Cooper won the 800 run (2:12.40), while Wyatt Johansen was first in the 3,200 run (10:28.70).

Cooper, Mitchel Johansen, McKinley Johansen and Billy Deslauriers joined together to win the 1,600 relay (3:45.00) for the Lancers, while Cooper, McKinley Johansen, Travis Dinius and Wyatt Johansen worked together to win the 3,200 relay (8:53.30).

Joey Lee won the high jump (5-11) and the triple jump (40-5.5) for LQPV/DB, while Joe Weeding was first in the 100 dash (11.40).

TMB’s Matt LaVoy took first in the 1,600 run (4:50.10), while Asa Nelson won the pole vault (11-6).

Zach Seaton, Josh Kirk, Rick Jorgenson and Bas Laros were part of the winning 400 relay team (47.30).

“We were nervous, as always, and it was really cold, but I thought we did really good in our relay,” Seaton said. “I think we could possibly go to state with the team we have. We have goals to do that, but we’ll have to practice even harder, especially on the handoffs.”

Lakeview’s Cory Schreier took first in the shot put (46-11).

Subsection competition begins Thursday for all of the participating teams.
