PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: MHS boys win St. Cloud Apollo Invitational

St. Cloud Apollo Invitational

ST. CLOUD – The Marshall Tigers boys and girls golf teams participated Thursday at the Saint Cloud Apollo Invitational, with the boys winning their meet.

The Tiger boys were led by a 1-under 71 from Matt Bennett, the top overall score at the event. Brent Haukom finished in a three-way tie for third after he shot a 2-over 74.

Alex Buysse (6-over 78) and Jacob Baker (7-over 79) were the final two Tiger boys to post sub-80 scores.

Marshall boys coach Allen Lucht felt his team improved their play from the last tournament.

“It was a team effort,” Lucht said. “The boys played really well and it was cool to watch. The team is starting to get where we should be at this time of the year with a 302.”

Lucht was especially pleased with the play of Bennett, who won the tournament and with Alex Buysse, who broke out of a slump and put together a nice par streak.

The Tiger girls posted a fifth-place finish, led by an 81 from Hanna Peterson. Jessica Blanchard shot an 84, followed by an 87 from Kami Love.

Marshall coach Nancy Blanchard was pleased with her team’s play.

“The girls held up very well,” Blanchard said. “It was a pretty cold day, but they fought through it. I thought the girls chipped and putted really well. This is one of the bigger tournaments as far as the number of teams. We got 10th last season, so to jump up to 5th was pretty cool to see.”
