A rising star

In the last year, Kaila Tingle moved onto Hollywood Week on “American Idol,” became part of a band and has been working on getting her songs out there.

She’ll be bringing some of those songs to Lake Benton next weekend.

Tingle will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at the Lake Benton Opera House. The opening act will be Melanie Koehlmoos and Adam Madsen.

Tingle, who is from Aurora, S.D., has been in a few of the shows at the Opera House, including “Sound of Music” and “High School Musical.”

Tingle has been writing her own music since she was 16 years old. She said the inspiration for her songs are about things that have happened to her.

“You’re literally putting yourself out there,” Tingle said. Tingle said she’s written about 30 or so songs since she began songwriting.

“I’m still writing more,” she said. Her writing style is described as alt country.

About a year ago, Tingle joined an Aberdeen S.D. based cover band, Avenger Joe.

“It’s pretty much all my weekends,” Tingle said about performing with the group. But her solo shows also keep her busy, Tingle said.

Tingle’s solo work has brought her to both Nashville, where her vocal instructor now lives, and to Las Vegas to perform at the ACM Experience.

“It was awesome, it was definitely an experience,” Tingle said about performing at the ACM Experience.

Tingle released her first full-length EP “Who I Am” in 2011.

Last summer, Tingle decided to try out for “American Idol.”

“I was actually not thinking about doing it at all,” Tingle said about auditioning for “American Idol.” But she went to Omaha, Neb., one of the audition venues.

Tingle said she started out with cover songs, but she got to sing one of her originals, “Last Song” in front of the judges. Tingle said she’s known of Keith Urban’s music as she’s grown up on country music and that she didn’t think about the fact that she was performing in front of Urban, Harry Connick Jr. and Jennifer Lopez.

“I didn’t want to get starstruck and flop (in front of the judges),” she said. “They were super-nice.”

Tingle did appear on-screen for a short interview for “Idol,” and she got to the second round of Hollywood week.

“I didn’t expect to get as far as I did,” she said.

Tingle said she plans to audition for “Idol” again this summer in Minneapolis. She said she also thought about going on “The Voice,” but the closest audition location was Cleveland.

If she doesn’t get any further on “Idol,” Tingle said she’s thinking about moving down to Nashville, hopefully making it big like Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift.
