Reaching out for help

To the editor:

As we enjoy our Memorial Day weekend I would like to ask the Independent and its readers to help a U.S. marine in need.

Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi has been in prison in Mexico since April 1. A combat veteran in the United States Marine Corps, Sgt. Tahmooressi was driving in San Diego when he made a wrong turn and accidentally crossed into Mexico with firearms. Instead of allowing him to make a u-turn and return to the U.S. he was taken into custody by the Mexican military. Since then he has received death threats and had to be transferred to another maximum security prison.

Please keep in mind every year there are many incidences of the armed Mexican military or law enforcement crossing into the U.S. U.S. Customs interviews them and sends them back across the border. Our marine should not be in prison for making a wrong turn.

Please go on the White House Petition website and sign the petition for his release. Also, contact your elected officials and demand action. It appears this is not a priority with our federal government.

As a former resident of the Minneota area, I appreciate everyone’s assistance.
