Johnson wins GOP endorsement

Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson came away with the GOP endorsement at Saturday’s Republican State Convention, while Marshall resident Marty Seifert will join Kurt Zellers and Scott Honour to make up a four-way primary to decide who will challenge DFL Gov. Mark Dayton in November.

Seifert announced late Saturday that he would continue on to the primary and released his delegates.

Seifert has long said he would remain open to continuing his campaign if he didn’t get the GOP nod at the convention. He won a straw poll last October as a write-in candidate and earlier this year won another poll on caucus night, just as he did in 2010 when he dropped out of the race at that year’s convention. He also won the support of College Republicans in April.

Seifert is a former Minority Leader and Majority Whip who spent 14 years in the House of Representatives.
