AMATEUR BASEBALL: Irish fall to Cards

MILROY – After falling behind 3-0, the Milroy Irish fell just short of a come from behind victory, losing 3-2 to the visiting Wilmont Cardinals on Sunday.

The Cardinals scored their first run in the first inning then stretched it to a 3-0 lead in the fifth with a two-run double from Blake Rogers.

The two baserunners were on via two Irish errors.

Milroy got on the board in the fifth with a single from Mason Schnaible in which he advanced to second on an error. Wilmont forced in the second Irish run in the sixth with a bases-loaded walk.

Lucas Henning worked two innings in relief and struck out five of the last six batters he faced.

In two separate innings, including the bottom of the ninth, the Irish left a runner stranded on second base, something manager Bob Dolan felt was a key part in the loss.

“We didn’t get the clutch hits,” Dolan said. “They did a good job of shutting us down when they needed to. We had guys in scoring position two or three times with one or no outs and we couldn’t get those big hits. That hurts. We need to get those hits.”

The Cardinals used the combination of Justin Saufley (Worthington, Wisconsin-Suprerior and Henning (Worthington, Mankato State) to keep the Irish at bay as the duo combined for 14 strikeouts.

Dolan knew they were in for a tough test going up against the Wilmont pitching staff.

“They are two of the better players in the league,” Dolan said. “Saufley is always good and Henning plays up at Mankato State. They have good pitching.”

Dominic Dolan drew the bases loaded walk to grab the RBI for the Irish while Tyler Peterson and Derek Riley scored the two runs.

All three of the Wilmont runs were unearned, but the Cardinals racked up hits from Blake Rogers (two), Jay Scheidt, Saufley, Joe Ahrens, Stuart Rogers and Mitchell Baumhoefner.

Milroy Pitcher Tyler Peterson worked 8? innings and struck out seven while walking just two.

Wilmont manager Todd Rogers was pleased with the way his team performed, but still saw needed improvements.

“We knew they’re a good ball club and that we needed to stay on top of them right away,” Rogers said. Pitching was solid and Blake hit that double to bring in the two runs. We need to start fielding the ball better.”

The Milroy Irish travel to play the Adrian A’s on Wednesday, while Wilmont host the Adrian A’s on Sunday.
