AMATEUR BASEBALL: A’s hold off Rockets to remain undefeated

RAYMOND – The Marshall A’s survied their close contest of the season, scraping by Raymond 10-9 on Sunday.

The Rockets took advantage of their hitters park dimensions, hitting three home runs and two RBI singles in the final two innings before a popout to first base and a strikeout by Ben Korger killed the rally and preserved the win.

Korger picked up the save and also had four RBI including a home run.

“Ben is doing a nice job out of the leadoff spot,” Marshall manager Matt Suby said. “He’s setting a nice pace and the rest of the lineup is following suit.”

Between the two teams, seven left the ballpark before the contest was over.

Jason Minnett and Andrew Kinney also homered for the A’s. They got two RBI from Austin Stubbs and Minnett while Jordon Kontz and Kinney each had one.

Steven Wehr picked up the win on the mound, going seven innings, striking out 12 and walking just one. He let up three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

Tom Deboer was saddled with the loss. He went six and one third, earning five strikeouts and walking five.

Tyler Steen, Sam Ohden and Calvin Kosminskas each had two RBI for the Rockets.

Suby was glad his team got the experience of playing a close game.

“It definitely gives you a confidence boost,” Suby said. “The guys did a great job of working through it. It’s always an interesting game when you go up to Raymond. It was a great game between two great teams.”

Marshall moves to 5-0 on the year and will be hosting Bird Island Wednesday before traveling to take on the Milroy Yankees on Friday.
