Rad Run to include ‘mini polar plunge’

MARSHALL – This year’s Rad Run Adventure Race in Garvin Park on Saturday, June 14, promises to be bigger, badder and radder with more obstacles, mud and a lot of fun.

LaVae Anderson, health and wellness director at the Marshall Area YMCA, said that it is the third year for the race, and she hopes to register even more racers than the 222 people that competed last year. Currently, Anderson said that there are 115 runners that have pre-registered.

“Sign up, and you won’t be sorry,” said Anderson. “It’s a lot of fun. Even if you’ve never done something like this, it’s something that most runners can do.” Some of the fastest times to conquer the course have been under 30 minutes.

Obstacles at the Garvin Park course include river crossings, rope spider-webs that racers can crawl through and mud pits that racers must conquer. A favorite part of the race, a slide down the old tubing hill, will be back again this year.

“There is also an obstacle involving tires,” Anderson said. “Participants will need to either carry or roll the tires from one space to another.”

New to the race this year is a kind of mini polar plunge.

“It’s a small water area filled with a water and ice mixture that runners will have to crawl through,”?Anderson said.

It takes a lot of work to put on an event like the Rad Run, but Anderson said that she has a lot of help.

“I am overwhelmed by the community support,” Anderson said. “We have over 20 sponsors and over 40 volunteers. We’ve raised over $2,000 to make the event happen. Without their help this race wouldn’t be able to happen.”

More than 400 flags will be plotted on the course, and volunteers will be stationed throughout the race to help direct runners.

“If you’re willing to get muddy, you can have a lot of fun,” Anderson said.

Race check-in begins at 8 a.m. with first wave beginning at 9 a.m. and every 10 minutes thereafter. There is still time to register. Participants can register Saturday morning before the race, or go online to www.radrunadventurerace.org to pre-register and for more information.
