Jerzak starts cosmetology career in her hometown
IVANHOE – When Nancy Jerzak graduated from Lincoln HI High School in 2011 and began training for a career in cosmetology, she had no idea that she would return to her hometown as a cosmetologist.
After graduating from Black Hills Beauty College in Sioux Falls, S.D., where she was enrolled in a 13-month cosmetology program, she received a phone call from Kelsey Bednarek, owner of Main Attraction in Ivanhoe asking her if she would be interested in a job as a licensed cosmetologist at Main Attraction after she graduated.
Before she started as a cosmetologist, Jerzak said that she worked at Main Attraction, answering the telephone, booking appointments, secretarial work and cleaning while she waited for her Minnesota cosmetology license to be processed.
“It took awhile, but I finally obtained my license to practice cosmetology in Minnesota on February 15, 2014,” said Jerzak. Two days later, she officially started her new job as a licensed cosmetologist in Minnesota at Main Attraction in Ivanhoe Feb. 17, and she said, “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”
At Main Attraction, Jerzak said she gives both men’s and women’s haircuts and does children’s haircuts for boys and girls. She also does hair coloring and perms, manicures, pedicures, shellac manicuring, and she gives scalp massages. She said that the busiest times of the year for all hair salons include Easter, proms, Mother’s Day, graduation and Christmas.
Jerzak grew up on a farm five miles south of Ivanhoe, near Arco. Her parents are Roger and Angie Jerzak of rural Arco. She attended elementary school, grades K-6 in Hendricks. After elementary school, she attended junior high and high school at Lincoln HI High School, Ivanhoe, graduating in 2011.
After graduating from Lincoln HI High School in 2011, Jerzak enrolled at Black Hills Beauty College in Sioux Falls, S.D., at the start of the 2012-2013 school year in September 2012.
“You had to complete 2,100 hours of classroom study in order to graduate,” Jerzak added. “Some of the classes that I took included hair sculpture, hair coloring, permanent waving and manicures and pedicures.”
Jerzak said that the main purpose of cosmetics is to promote beauty and attractiveness to areas of the face and body.
“When I was in college, my classroom hours were from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays and the majority of my training consisted of a one hour class in the mornings studying cosmetology theory, and the rest of the day was spent working on the hair salon floor tending to clients,” Jerzak said.
While attending college, Jerzak received several perfect attendance awards, and she received several instructor choice awards. She also received an award for being able to fix hair and do perms quickly, efficiently and accurately. She pointed out that during the time she was away at college, she learned that treating customers in a respectable, friendly and courteous manner, your customers will keep coming back.
“I take great pride in the work I do and like with any business, if you have a positive attitude, you enjoy helping others you will have return customers and be successful,” said Jerzak. “I give special credit to my parents for teaching me a strong work ethic and teaching me what responsibility is at an early age.”
Some of the special highlights that Jerzak recalls while attending school at Black Hills Beauty College was when she volunteered to paint nails and give hand and arm massages to breast cancer survivors during the annual Avera-Sioux Falls Breast Cancer Walk in May 2013. She also did volunteer work for the South Dakota Achieve Program, an organization for individuals with special needs and/or who are handicapped.
When she volunteered for the South Dakota Achieve Program, she would give free haircuts and provide free manicures and free pedicures and provide free up-do’s.
While attending Black Hills Beauty College, Jerzak was employed at Bath and Body Works, located at the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls, S.D. Jerzak graduated second in her class of 17 students at Black Hills Beauty College and she is a licensed cosmetologist in both Minnesota and South Dakota. After she graduated from Black Hills Beauty College on Oct. 30, 2013, Jerzak said she moved back to the Ivanhoe area and was working at Veire’s bp Gas Station and Mini Mart in Lake Benton while she was waiting for her Minnesota cosmetology license to be processed.
When she isn’t busy working at Main Attraction, Jerzak said she enjoys fishing, golfing, reading, listening to music and hanging out with her younger sister, Maranda, who recently graduated from Lincoln HI High School. She said she also likes to go shopping, attending concerts and visiting with family and friends and spending time with her puppy Oliver. She also works part time at the Club House at the Lake Hendricks Golf Course in Hendricks.
Jerzak said that she has been involved in numerous church and community activities throughout the years. She said that she, along with her dad and mom Roger and Angie and her sister Maranda, are members of Bethany Elim Lutheran Church in Ivanhoe.
“I’m grateful and appreciative to Main Attraction owner Kelsey Bednarek for giving me an opportunity to use my cosmetology training, and I’m looking forward to serving customers in Ivanhoe and in the surrounding area,” said Jerzak.
