Summer spotlight

The “Summer Spotlight” section will run weekly and will feature upcoming weekend festivals going on around the area.

Today: Hat Daze, Saddle Horse Holiday.

Weekend: Hats and horses

CANBY – Events are scheduled from Friday to Sunday afternoon at this weekend’s annual Hat Daze celebration.

Free swimming at the Canby Swimming Pool will be offered all weekend long, as well as a softball tournament, free day passes and picnicking at Del Clark/Stone Hill Campground and free camping at Sylvan and Triangle parks. Most of the early weekend events will take place in or around Central Park.

Sunday will conclude with events at the airport and an action-packed air show.


1-3 p.m. – Senior citizens card tournament, Senior Center

2-4 p.m. – K-6 bike rodeo, Canby Elementary School

5-7 p.m. – Pork supper, Central Park

5-7 p.m. – Hot Shot basketball tournament

5-8 p.m. – Self-guided twilight garden tour, maps at Chamber booth in Central Park

5:30 p.m. – Kid’s pedal pull, Central Park

6 p.m.-dark – High Prairie Sporting Clays Father/Son Shoot, $25 for 50 targets

6 p.m. – Outdoor bar and brat event (first beverage is on the VFW), VFW

7-8 p.m. – Sheltered Reality drumline entertainment, Central Park

7:30 p.m. – Outdoor entertainment by the Roxbury Band (free admission), VFW

LAKE BENTON – Horses and hoofs will be taking over Lake Benton this weekend. The 68th annual Saddle Horse Holiday kicks off today with a hidden horseshoe contest. Rule and clues will be posted daily at the Lake Benton Heritage Center and broadcast on KLOH radio. Prizes include a Lake Benton T-shirt and $50.
