Mudcats top BV

MARSHALL – The Mudcats earned a split with Brandon Valley Thursday night, losing the second game 8-6 after leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

They won the first game 7-4 with a late-game rally.

Marshall manager Mitch Maxwell saw both positives and some room for improvement after the split.

“We made some physical mistakes,” Maxwell said. “It was physical as opposed to mental. Those are things we have to do better to win. If we give away free bases, it hurts us. I thought we hit the ball well at times and Connor threw well in game one.”

Maxwell was also pleased with the pitching performance of Adam Kovash, with the exception of one bad inning that saw Brandon Valley use smallball to get a big inning.

Even with the split, BV coach Grant Hieb knew his team had to play better.

“It wasn’t pretty,” Hieb said. “We played a lot better the second game. We weren’t focued and ready ti play. It was nice to see them bounce back the second game.

Even with a loss in the second game, Marshall’s Connor Winkleman provided a highlight, hitting a home run over the left field fence.

It was the first home run to leave the yard in the fall and summer seasons combined.

“It felt good,” Winkleman said. “I had never even come close to hitting a hom run, so I was really shocked when I hit it. I didn’t think it was going over, so I was sprinting to first base.”
