Hoeft leads Mudcats to win over Chester in Gopher Tournament

ST. LOUIS PARK – Marshall opened the 2014 Jim Hanus Gopher Classic with a 6-2 win over Chester Bird on Friday.

Marshall never trailed in the game. They struck first in the third inning with three runs. Chester Bird scored two runs in the bottom-half of the third to cut the deficit to one run, but that was as cose as they would get. Marshall added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to seal the deal.

Nate Hoeft got the start on the mound for Marshall and went the full seven innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and added seven strikeouts.

Hoeft scored two runs of his own on the basepaths on a 1-for-3 night at the plate.

Scott Buss and Dylan Criquet-Danielson connected on two hits apiece for Marshall. Buss drove in a run and scored one, while Criquet-Danielson added a RBI, as well.

The Mudcats will take on Anoka tomorrow at 8 a.m. before taking on Papillion (Neb.) at 10:30 a.m.
