PORTER – Services for Elvina Syltie, 94, of Porter, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at Birk Funeral Home in Canby with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Porter.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bethel Lutheran Church, Sanford Canby Hospice or donor’s choice.
She died Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby.
Elvina was born Jan. 11, 1920, in Albert Lea to Otto and Martha (Davidson) Bergerson. She was baptized and confirmed at Lime Creek Lutheran Church, Emmons. Elvina was raised on a farm in Freeborn County. She graduated from Emmons High School and then attended the University of Minnesota. While she was in college, she worked for her room and board. After one year of college, she moved to Ivanhoe and worked as an extension agent for Lincoln County. While living in Ivanhoe, she met Hans Syltie and they were married June 8, 1941, at Lime Creek Lutheran Church. After their marriage, they made their home on a farm near Porter and remained there for 38 years before moving into Porter upon their retirement.
Besides raising her children and helping on the farm, Elvina was very active in various organizations and activities. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church where she served in church offices, WELCA offices, Sunday School teacher and a confirmant mentor. She also loved to volunteer her time at the nursing home, church, 4-H and school. Elvina was a Lincoln County Horticultural member, Extension member and Sons of Norway member. When she had time, she loved vegetable and flower gardening and straw crafts.
Elvina is survived by her children, Karen (and Harlo) Peterson of Naples, FL, Anita (and Eff) Embree of Bloomington, Ill., Ellen (and Bill) Spurlock of Lakeville and Harvey (and Paula) Syltie of Porter; six grandchildren, Sara Spurlock, Lisa (and Phil) Canfield, Edward Embree, Annalea Embree, Michael (and Kelsey) Syltie and Lindsey Syltie; two great-grandchildren, Adam and Kylie Asleson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband (1983); brother, Lester Bergerson (1999); sister, Orla Christianson (2005) and brother, Marvin Bergerson (2013).
