Marshall Blue beat Tyler-Marshall VFW
MARSHALL- The Marshall Blue played an aggressive style of baseball to earn a victory in the second round of the VFW tournament. The team had ten hits, eight stolen bases, and ten walks to beat the Tyler-Marshall VFW team 9-3 at Legion Park on Saturday morning.
Marshall centerfielder Nick Fosvick set the tone of the game in the first inning. After advancing to first base on a walk, he stole both second and third base during the next at bat. He scored the first run of the game after Myron Penske advanced him home on a fielder’s choice.
Marshall Coach Chace Pollock was pleased with his teams smart play on the base paths, “They read and react. If a situation presents itself they are ready to take an extra base if they need to. They were heady today and aggressive and forced the issue.”
Every Blue player reached base during the game. Jacob Buysee went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Mitchel Pauling went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Mason Penske, Matt Thompson, and Ryan Van Moer each crossed home plate twice for the blue.
Pollock also gave credit to the other side of the game for their play, “It starts with pitching and defense.” Starting pitcher Thomas Fischer struck out eight while giving up only one run.
Even though Tyler had a rough day, Coach Jeff Moberg was proud of his players effort. Moberg had to adjust his lineup due to the need for rest and two players away on a church mission trip.
Tyler Pitcher Ross Johnson stepped up for the first start of his pitching career. “He was a little anxious and nervous playing the number one seed,” said Moberg. In addition to pitching against the number one seed, Johnson was also nursing injuries from his farm chores. “Every finger has a blister going, he learned to hold [the ball] on the fingertips,so that helped him out,” said Moberg. Even with the pressure and blisters, Johnson pitched a scoreless second inning and threw five strikeouts.
Tyler strung together two runs in the top of the seventh inning after Hunter Vanlerberghe and Ross Johnson each drove in a run.
The Blue advance to the third round of the tournament next Saturday.
