Pair arrested in shooting await court appearance
MARSHALL – Two men arrested in connection with a shooting near Granite Falls on July 18 are waiting for their first appearance in Yellow Medicine County District Court, court records said Thursday.
Bail hearings were held for Derek Michael Hexum, 19, and Devin Donald Hexum, 21, both of Balaton, on Thursday morning, court records said.
A first court appearance has been scheduled for Derek Hexum on Aug. 4.
Criminal complaints were filed against both men in Yellow Medicine County on Thursday. The complaint against Devin Hexum includes charges of second degree attempted murder and first degree assault.
The complaint against Derek Hexum includes charges of aiding an offender to avoid arrest.
The complaints allege that the two men gave 30-year-old Daniel Lee Scheff a ride in their pickup, and that later Devin Hexum shot Scheff multiple times. The complaints allege Scheff was later able to identify his shooter.
Scheff was found in the early hours of July 18, lying on Minnesota Highway 23 south of Granite Falls, bleeding from apparent gunshot wounds. Scheff was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office said.
Derek and Devin Hexum were arrested Tuesday, following a multi-county highway pursuit that ended on Lincoln County Road 137, about one-half mile from the South Dakota Border, the YMC Sheriff’s Office said. A State Patrol incident report said a State Trooper used a vehicle maneuver to stop the truck the Hexums were traveling in.
The State Patrol report had identified Derek Hexum as being from Gordon, Ga., while the Yellow Medicine County criminal complaint uses a Balaton address.
