Yankees rally to beat Bird Island

MILROY- The Milroy Yankees rallied for an emotional 9-8 win against the Bird Island BullFrogs at Milroy Ballpark on Friday night. The win gives the Yankees the number one seed in the Minnesota Amatuer Baseball Regional Playoffs.

The Yankees were looking to close a one-run gap in the top of the eighth inning. Colton Peterson pinch hit and drew a walk. Chris Verdoes bunted Peterson to second base. Michah Gronli hit a double off the wall to tie the game at eight. Eric Dolan hit a double through second and third to load the bases. Dave Schmidt hit into a fielder’s choice to score Granli.

Milroy put together a furious ralley in the bottom of the seventh after giving up two in the top half of the inning. First baseman Matt Bauer avenged his previous two at bats against the Bird Island pitcher with a hit to drive in a run. Milroy ended up scoring four runs in the inning to come within one.

Micah Gronli went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Eric Dolan went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Dave Schmidt went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Austin Deutz pitched four innings and gave up two runs and got seven strikeouts for the win. His brother Nathan Deutz came in for relief in the fifth inning. He gave up five hits, six runs, and struck out five.

The Yankees will travel to Watkins next Friday for the first round of the regional playoffs at 7:30 p.m.
