A blend of old and new

MARSHALL – Fair season is back, and the Lyon County fairgrounds is full of activity again as fair organizers and 4-H members alike get ready for opening day. Organizers said this week that there’s lots of entertainment lined up for this year’s fair, and they hope visitors will take advantage of the fair’s free admission and parking to come check it out.

The Lyon County Fair starts Wednesday in Marshall.

“We’ve had a lot of new visitors,” since offering free admission, said Dan Johnson of the Lyon County Fair Board.

Johnson said this year’s fair promises to be a good family event.

“Something we always try to do is put lots of entertainment on the ground,” Johnson said. Fair organizers have brought together a combination of past favorites and new shows and features.

One new addition to the Lyon County fairgrounds is a hoop barn that will serve as a shelter for the fair’s free stage. A variety of musical performances will be held in the barn, including bluegrass band Monroe Crossing. The free stage will also have musical entertainment in the evening, Johnson said.

“We’re trying something new,” he said. “We’ll have a live band and a DJ.”

There will also be several different entertainment events. The Timberworks lumberjack show is returning to the fair this year, featuring events from log rolling to speed-carving. A new addition to the fair will be the BMX bike show.

“They set up a course and do stunts on bicycles,” Johnson said. “They do shows throughout the day,” he said, and on Friday and Saturday fair visitors have a chance to win in a bike giveaway.

Also performing throughout the fair will be the members of “Dr. Silas McFee’s Magical Medicine Show.”

“They’re kind of a living history reenactment,” recalling the days of traveling patent medicine salesmen, Johnson said. “It’s something our generation has never seen.”

There will be some changes to the fair’s midway this year. Instead of amusement rides, Johnson said the fair will host a variety of inflatable attractions, including one giant slide that stands 34 feet tall.

The grandstand will feature perennial favorites like the PRCA Rodeo, which will be back for its 17th year in Marshall, Johnson said. The draft horse show will be held Wednesday night, and the demolition derby returns on Saturday.
