Farmer’s Open coming to Marshall Golf Club

MARSHALL, Minn. The Southwest Minnesota State University Athletics Department along with the Marshall Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the third annual Farmer’s Open on Monday, Aug. 4, at the Marshall Golf Club.

The event gets underway with lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a four-person golf scramble beginning with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. All proceeds from the event go towards scholarships for SMSU student-athletes with an agriculture-related major. Last season’s tournament had 125 golfers and raised more than $15,000.

“The reinstatement of the Farmer’s Open in Marshall has been a collaborative effort over the last three years by local farmers, ag industry, the Marshall Chamber of Commerce and Southwest Minnesota State University,” said Chris Hmielewski, SMSU Director of Athletics. “The Farmer’s Open Committee is a very active group who has gone out into the ag community and gathered strong support for this annual event. The Farmer’s Open Committee has established an endowment with the SMSU Foundation with half of the money raised each year going into the endowment and half going into the athletic scholarship fund to support student-athletes who are majoring in one of SMSU’s Agricultural programs. The Farmer’s Open provides local ag businesses the opportunity for customer appreciation while showing the importance of the agricultural industry and educational opportunities in the Marshall Community.”

Title sponsors for this event include Titan Machinery, D&G Excavating, Lockwood Motors, Helena, Monsanto and Ralco.

“We are proud to be a part of such great event,” said Lucas Hilgemann, store manager at Titan Machinery in Marshall. “It is great to see the community’s appreciation for agriculture and the support for SMSU student-athletes.”
