Shooting suspects appear in YMC court

Two Balaton men charged in connection with a shooting near Granite Falls in July appeared in Yellow Medicine County District Court on Monday, court records said. In hearings Monday morning, attorneys representing both the state of Minnesota and the two men filed requests for disclosure of evidence in the case. A request for fingerprints and a cheek swab from Devin Donald Hexum was also filed Monday, court records said.

Devin Hexum, 21, is charged with second degree attempted murder and first degree assault in the shooting of 30-year-old Daniel Lee Scheff. Derek Michael Hexum, 19, is charged with aiding an offender to avoid arrest. Criminal complaints allege the two men gave Scheff a ride out of Granite Falls in their pickup truck, and that later Devin Hexum shot at Scheff multiple times at close range.

Scheff was found lying on Minnesota Highway 23 south of Granite Falls on July 18, bleeding from apparent gunshot wounds, the complaint said. Scheff was transported to the Granite Falls hospital and later to the Hennepin County Medical Center.

Derek and Devin Hexum were arrested four days later, after a multi-county highway pursuit that ended on a Lincoln County road, about half a mile from the South Dakota border. A State Patrol report said a State Trooper used a maneuver on the Hexums’ vehicle, which caused the vehicle to roll into the ditch.

The charges Devin Hexum faces are both felonies. In Minnesota, second degree attempted murder carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
