Mustangs come in at No. 3 in preseason poll

MARSHALL- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference released its preseason coaches poll Tuesday and the Mustangs are once again expected to compete for a conference title.

Junior Abby Thissen will be one of the top returners for the Mustangs.

The Clara City native led the team in kills with 444 last season while hitting .261 and coming up with 62 blocks, good for third on the team.

Thissen also helped the Mustangs reach the semi finals of the NCAA Division II tournament.

Southwest Minnesota State come in with a No. 3 ranking in the poll, topped only by Minnesota Duluth and Concordia St. Paul.

This is the 11th straight time the Golden Bears have been picked to top the conference and they have won the past seven NCAA Division II Championships.

Kelsey Chambers of Northern State has been voted the NSIC Preseason Player of the year.

Last season, Chambers was third in the NSIC in points per set at 4.71 and had the 10th best attacking percentage at .311.

She had seven double-doubles and led Northern State in kills and hitting percentage as well as second in double-doubles and digs.
