The “Summer Spotlight” section runs weekly and features upcoming festivals going on around the area.
Today: Boxelder Bug Days.
Memorial display ready for
Boxelder Bug Days
Always wanted to see boxelder bugs race? Then Minneota Boxelder Bug Days, which begins Friday and runs through Sunday, is for you.
Other highlights of the festival include a cowboy comedian, a juggler, a rib cook-off, a climbing wall and Euro-bungee.
A new display has been added to the Vietnam War Memorial Center in Minneota. Donated by Valerie Downing of Taunton in memory of her son, Matthew Rand, who was killed in a car crash June 8, 2013, in Balaton, the metal art display depicts military heroes.
“Matthew had a soft spot in his heart for all those who served in Vietnam,” said Downing. “His father is a Vietnam vet.” Rand served in the National Guard.
The center will be opened during Boxelder Bugs Days from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, or however long people are still coming, said Memorial Center founder Charlie Hettling.
Hettling just came back from another trip to Vietnam and brought more artifacts to display in the museum, he said. It was his 23rd trip to Vietnam.
Hettling and his brother, Royal, are both Vietnam War veterans.
The center is located on Highway 68 between the post office and Bubba’s Bar.
